Alice G. (Gochenour) Mayberry

Alice G. Mayberry, 97, of Sims, IL left her home in Sims, IL and moved to her heavenly home at 7:57 a.m. on Friday, September 2, 2022.  Alice was born on April 20, 1925 in Fairfield, IL to the late Harry and Violet Fay (Holmes) Gochenour.

She married Ora B. “Biggn’” Mayberry on October 8, 1953 in Sims, IL.  They were blessed with 40 years of marriage.

Alice is survived by her children: O. Bruce (Robin) Mayberry of Bluford, IL; Joe (Helen) Mayberry of Sims, IL; Jon Mayberry of Wayne City, IL; and Christina (Rob) Greenwalt of Wayne City; 11 grandchildren: K. Scarlet (Jeff) Braddock, Sarah (Domingo) Estrada, Allison (Jason) Matthews, Jennifer Mayberry, Melissa (Derek) Ford, Jimmy Mayberry, Alex (Chad) Clymer, Sheri (Ryne) Thomason, Nick (Cheyanne) Tibbs, Kelsey (Leyth) Fenton, and Orrie Greenwalt; and 22 great-grandchildren.

She was preceded in death by her husband and one infant daughter Lee Ann Mayberry.

Alice was a homemaker and co-owner of Mayberry Farms.  Before marrying “Biggn’”, she worked at Airtex in Fairfield, IL.  She was saved, baptized, and a member of the Sims General Baptist Church.  She was a loving mother and grandmother.  She tutored many of her grandchildren and loved learning.  Before losing her sight, she was an avid reader, at one time reading all the books at the Wayne City Library.  She also made over 100 quilts.  Her family has many of them, but she gifted and donated many to those in need.  She is the last of her generation of siblings and spouses to leave this earthly life.  She is now in Heaven, being reunited with many loved ones and meeting Jesus.  In these last few months, she especially enjoyed visits from friends and family, being read to from the Bible, singing with the grandchildren and great-grandchildren, solving crossword puzzles, and talking with Jesus.  She is already sorely missed.

Private family funeral services for Alice G. Mayberry will be held at Young Funeral Home in Wayne City, IL on Monday, September 5, 2022 at 12:00 noon with Rev. Jeff Braddock and Bro. Rob Greenwalt officiating.  There will be public visitation at the funeral home at 11:00 a.m. Monday until the time of service at 12:00 noon.  Interment will follow the funeral service at Baltimore Cemetery in Mayberry, IL (south of Wayne City).  Online condolences and memories may be shared at www.youngfuneralhomellc.com
