Mary "Kathryn" Kathryn (Johnson) Toombs

Mary Kathryn Toombs, 94, of Mt. Vernon, IL, formerly of Fairfield, IL, passed away on Sunday, May 8, 2022 at Mt. Vernon Healthcare in Mt. Vernon, IL.

She was born in Arbyrd, MO on January 26, 1928, the daughter of Martin Wilbur & Cymbeline (Swansisee) Johnson.  Kathryn married Charles Toombs on January 28, 1955 in Carmi, IL.  He preceded her in death on March 26, 1995.

She worked at Airtex in Fairfield for many years and retired in 1990.  She was a member of the Mt. Vernon Church of Christ, where she was known for the excellent pies she brought to church pot lucks.

Kathryn is survived by her daughter Vicki (Jim) Young of Bluford, IL; 2 grandchildren: Keith (Erica) Young of Granite City, IL and Kevin (Kasey) Young of Bluford, 2 great-grandchildren: Jenna Young and Vesper Young, a sister Louise Johnson Olsa of San Clemente, CA; a brother-in-law Bob Toombs of Columbia, IL; and several nieces and nephews.

She was preceded in death by her parents Martin Wilbur & Cymbeline Johnson, her husband Charles Toombs, and a sister Evelyn Pontius.

Kathryn’s family would like to give a special thanks to Tammy and the other nurses from Residential Hospice who provided excellent care for Kathryn.

Funeral services for Mary Kathryn Toombs will be held at 11 am on Wednesday, May 11, 2022 at Young Funeral Home in Wayne City, IL with Pastor Justin Odom officiating.  Visitation will be held Wednesday from 9:30 am until the time of service at 11 am.  Interment will follow the funeral service at Thomason Cemetery in Wayne City.  In lieu of flowers, memorials may be made to the Mt. Vernon Church of Christ or to the donor’s choice, and will be accepted at Young Funeral Home in Wayne City.
